A kitchen can look ready for cabinets long before it actually is. Homeowners often ask, when should cabinets be installed during a remodel? The short answer: after the room is dry, level, measured, and the rough mechanical work is complete, but before countertops, final flooring in many cases, and finish appliances are installed.

Getting that sequence right protects the cabinets you selected, prevents costly rework, and gives installers the stable surfaces they need for a clean result. In Phoenix-area homes, timing also matters because long lead times, slab conditions, and active remodeling schedules can turn one out-of-order step into a delay for the entire kitchen.

When Should Cabinets Be Installed During a Kitchen Remodel?

Cabinets should generally be installed after demolition, framing changes, plumbing and electrical rough-ins, drywall, and wall priming are complete. The space should be clean, dry, and accessible. It should also be measured one final time before the order is released or installation begins.

Cabinets come before countertop templating because countertops are measured from the cabinets after they are secured and leveled. They also come before installing a range, refrigerator, dishwasher, and most other appliances. Those appliances depend on cabinet openings, finished panels, and countertop clearances being correct.

The key is not simply waiting until construction is "mostly done." Cabinet installation begins when the room has reached a dependable checkpoint. Walls cannot still be moving, floors cannot be significantly out of level without a plan, and trades cannot need to cut open cabinet walls to complete their work.

What Needs to Be Finished First

A well-managed cabinet installation starts with preparation. Each item below affects fit, finish, or the ability to make accurate decisions about the layout.

Hardwood, tile, and glued-down flooring can often be installed before cabinets. This creates a continuous finished floor and gives future layout changes more flexibility. However, it may add material cost under cabinets where the flooring will never be seen.

Floating floors, including many luxury vinyl plank and laminate products, should usually be installed after cabinets. Floating materials need room to expand and contract. Heavy cabinets installed on top can restrict that movement and may affect the floor manufacturer's warranty. In that case, installers set the cabinets on the subfloor or an approved underlayment, then run the flooring up to the cabinet toe kicks with the correct expansion gap.

Appliances: Know What Must Be On Site

A typical kitchen project follows a clear order: finalize the layout and selections, complete demolition and any structural changes, finish rough plumbing and electrical, prepare walls and ceiling, verify field measurements, then deliver and install cabinets. Countertops are templated next, followed by fabrication and installation. Backsplash, finish electrical and plumbing, appliances, hardware, and final paint touch-ups complete the room.

Some projects overlap steps to save time, but only when the work will not compromise the cabinets or create rework. For example, cabinet hardware is often installed after the doors are adjusted and protected work is finished. Under-cabinet lighting can be planned early and completed after cabinet installation, provided wiring was roughed in correctly.

Installing before rough-ins are complete can require cutting into finished cabinet interiors. Scheduling countertops before cabinets are secure guarantees a rework situation.
